Spotlight on RIOA

Rutherford County Schools uses the Read It Once Again (RIOA) units in our Integrated Pre-K (IPK) Program in classrooms located in schools across the district. Our IPK classes support preschool students 3 and 4-years-old with individual education plans (IEPs) alongside peers who act as models to promote language development. Using the RIOA units supports our students by promoting early and foundational literacy skills in reading and math, as well as promote theme-based language and vocabulary to build background knowledge from a rich literature experience using children’s literature.

Teachers can easily incorporate fine motor activities using cutting, pasting, and manipulating objects during small group skill-based rotations to support IEP goals. Early  math concepts are supported with matching, counting, and cardinal order. During calendar and whole group activities teachers can promote language, turn-taking, peer interactions, gross motor, and sequencing. In dramatic play centers, students can dress up, retell and pretend play based on the current book. Our teachers easily incorporate activities in sensory and science centers and art.

After each unit our students are given a copy of the book to take home to read with parents and share their experiences from their preschool classroom. What our teachers enjoy most is how easily they can pull activities together and create exciting and fun opportunities for students to experience a rich literacy and language based preschool experience.
